Revisional Foot Surgery Q&A

What is revisional foot surgery?

Revisional foot surgery available at Precision Foot & Ankle Center uses advanced surgical techniques to repair damaged tissues resulting from a failed foot or ankle surgery. Dr. Jacob is highly trained in revisional foot surgery and has many years of experience correcting past failed surgeries. She realigns, repairs, or reconstructs targeted structures in your foot or ankle, with the goals of lessening your pain and getting you back to your favorite activities Whether you had a unsuccessful bunionectomy, diabetic foot surgery, flatfoot reconstruction, or ankle surgery, Dr. Jacob is here for you.

Is revisional foot surgery right for me?

If you experience ongoing pain or obvious tissue deformities after foot surgery, you’re likely a candidate for revisional foot surgery at Precision Foot & Ankle Center. Dr. Jacob may recommend this treatment if you’ve experienced a failed surgery for bunions, hammertoes, joint repair, joint replacement, or other foot or ankle procedures.

To find out which treatment is best, she reviews your symptoms, lifestyle habits, and your medical history. She also checks your vital signs and examines your lower extremities during a physical exam to determine if you are a good candidate for revisional surgery.

You might need blood tests, X-rays, nerve testing, an ultrasound, or other imaging procedures to determine which type of revisional surgery is best.

How should I get ready for revisional foot surgery?

Follow Dr. Jacob’s instructions before you undergo revisional foot surgery. Stop taking certain medications if she asks you to, don’t smoke, and arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you after surgery. She lets you know what to expect and how to best prepare.

What should I expect during the procedure?

Before undergoing revisional foot surgery, you receive anesthesia to numb the area and help you fall asleep. Dr. Jacob makes an incision to remove, repair, replace, or reconstruct tissues in your foot or ankle while you are under anesthesia. She takes you to a recovery area afterwards either in the hospital or surgery center. Some smaller procedures can also be done in the office, in a dedicated procedure room.

What happens after revisional foot surgery?

You might be able to go home the same day as your surgery, but have a friend or family member drive you. You may receive a bandage, splint, brace, boot, or crutches after your surgery. Take medications as directed, ice the area, get plenty of rest, and attend follow-up appointments at Precision Foot & Ankle Center. You might undergo physical therapy sessions.

Complete healing might take a few weeks, months, or longer, depending on the type of procedure you’ve had. It is not uncommon for revisional surgeries to take longer to heal.
